Cases of Chronic Urticaria

Case 3:      Chronic urticaria in a young female

This is the case of a 25 years old female who had complaints of urticaria since 6 months when she reported to the clinic in January 2004. The urticaria predominantly involved the face. She would get rashes over her face after consuming food and it would last for half an hour or so. The complaints would be worse at night and there would be much itching and burning of the affected parts. She was on conventional anti-histamines for the control of the symptoms but the complaints would recur inspite of being on these medicines.

Along with this she also had complaints of acne since a year. She would get papular and pustular eruptions on the face and these would be worse during change of weather and while traveling. Lack of proper sleep and fried foods would also worsen her complaints.

Knee pains had also been troubling her since 3-4 months and she experienced difficulty in getting up from the sitting position and while ascending stairs. She was unable to squat due to these complaints.

Her appetite was average and she was fond of sweets and spicy food. Her thirst was decreased and water intake was much less than average. Her sweat was offensive and would stain the garments. She was habitually constipated.

She had a job and it there was some stress on the job front. She said that she had become irritable of late and would easily get angry. She had a feeling of frustration and sadness which she would not share with others.

She had suffered from jaundice and malaria in the past and there was no history of any other major illness in the past. Both her parents were diabetic and grandfather had ischemic heart disease.

Based on this history she was started on homoeopathic medicines and she improved very well with the treatment. Her urticaria was status quo in the first two months of treatment but then it improved significantly over the next few weeks and at the end of four months from starting the treatment she was completely off her antihistamines and relatively rash-free inspite of stopping the antihistamines. After another month her urticaria had completely disappeared and she did not require any more treatment for this. Her acne had also improved over all these months though she kept getting occasional increase in the acne for which she had to continue the treatment for some more time. Overall she did much better with the homoeopathic treatment and it also helped her to get rid of her dependence on the anti-histaminic which would give her only temporary, short-lasting relief.

Case 4:         A Computer science student with
                                  Chronic Urticaria

This is the case of a 22 yrs old male from Newark, USA, a student of Computer science, reported with urticaria since 3 yrs. Patient would get red rashes on the skin wherever he would scratch the skin. The complaints would begin with intense itching which would later lead to development of rashes on the parts scratched, more on the back and legs. These complaints would occur 3 to 4 times daily being worst at night. He would suffer badly after taking chicken, meat, eggs and pickles. The itching would get worse after a warm bath. He would experience relief only after taking anti-histaminics, the effect of which would also be short lasting.

Other aspects of his case:
Stress of achieving deadlines for projects or assignments was an important element in this case especially because he would procrastinate his work till the last moment. He was a shy person especially when it came to interacting with females. He would fear dogs, lizards, snakes and ghosts. He would be afraid when alone in darkness. He was very attached to his friends and would be extremely hurt when they would misunderstand him.

There was no history of any major illnesses in the past or in his family.

Based on these symptoms the patient was prescribed homoeopathic medicines and he did extremely well with the treatment. He was put on a drug caled Apis alongwith a few doses of Astacus and Medusa. Within just 4 months of treatment, his urticaria was almost cured. He would no longer get the rashes as he used to get before. He would occasionally get some kind of irritation of the skin but that would subside soon enough without any treatment. Thus he got cured of his 3 years long problem and he led a much better quality of life.
