Drug is substance which as medicinal properties. Medicines are drugs of which exact medicinal properties are known. Remedies are the medicines suitable for a specific patient at a particular time.

Homeopathic remedies are those homeopathic medicines, which are selected for a patient based on the following points:

The homeopathic remedies are selected from a large number of homeopathic medicines available in the repertoire of homeopathy. There are over 3000 homeopathic medicines. Based on the patient's parameters, only a few will be required for the patient at a given time, in a particular sequence.

To determine homeopathic medicines for a patient, a details case study is required. The homeopathic doctor has to investigate the points stated above.

The homeopathic remedies can be grouped as under:

a. Constitutional homeopathic remedies or remedy are those, which are based on the total study of the patient's physical and mental constitutional. Such a medicine has to be deep-acting medicine and it has a power of addressing the disease at deeper level. One may require one or may be a couple of constitutional homeopathic remedies over the period of time.

Commonly used constitutional homeopathic remedies are: Lycopodium clavatum, Silica, Kali carbonicum, Sulphur, Phophorus, Causticum, Sepia, Pulsatilla Nigra, Zincum metallicum, etc.

b. Disease specific homeopathic remedies are chosen on the basis of:

i. Nature of the disease and its pathology

ii. Extent of disease, stage of the disease

iii. Curability or incurability of disease

iv. Reversibility or irreversibility of the disease

Based on above, some homeopathic remedies may be chosen to give relief in the disease symptoms, by the time the constitutional homeopathic remedies brings changes at deeper level.

Commonly used disease specific homeopathic remedies are: Hepar sulphuricum, Arnica Montana, Merc-solubus, Sangunaria, etc.

These are the medicines, which assist, push and enhance the effects of constitutional homeopathic medicines. Based largely on the genetic influences, such homeopathic remedies are very powerful and deeply activating. Correct selection of such an inter-current homeopathic remedies is very important by the homeopathic doctor.
